Presidents

Lesson 3

Who has lived in Áras an Uachtaráin over the past 100 years?

Áras an Uachtaráin has been the home of the president of Ireland since 1938.

Here is a slide show credited to www.seomraranga.com of all the past presidents of the republic of Ireland.

In your pairs construct your own timeline of the presidents of Ireland using Glogster. Click this link to go to the website. http://www.glogster.com/

Here is Danny the Deer to help us understand the role of the President of Ireland.

Next, the class will be divided into four groups. Each class group will be designated an important past president.

Group 1: Douglas Hyde
Group 2: Eamon De Valera
Group 3: Mary Robinson
Group 4: Mary McAleese

For information on your groups designated past president follow the links below.

All groups must research their specific presidents in depth in order to complete a digital video of an imagined interview with their past president.

The group must re-enact interviews with their past president.

An example of a wonderful interview by a Scholastic kid reporter with Goosebumps author R.L. Stein

The groups must create an interview script of the imagined interview between a reporter and their group's specific past president.

The interviewers questions must include:

  • Who are you?
  • When were you born?
  • Where were you born?
  • Where did you study/ go to college?
  • When did you get elected president?
  • How long did you live in Áras an Uachtaráin?
  • What makes you different to all the other presidents?

Be Creative! Try and find out some really interesting facts about your past President.

Here is a Popplet which displays some famous quotes of the past presidents.

Fun fact: You have to be at least thirty-five to apply for presidency.

Lesson 4

After the interview scripts have been corrected and returned by the class teacher, the groups may begin filming their interview with the president.

In your groups you must decide who is the director, camera-person, interviewer, president, costume-designer and script manager. Collect one camera per group, costumes and props from the teacher.

Here is an example of a real interview with Michael D.Higgins.

Final interview shoots will be uploaded and edited on the Apple Mac laptops which will be provided by the school.

Prize for best Interview!!!

The group that films the best interview will be selected to be shown at the school assembly.

Fun fact: In 1940 President Douglas Hyde published a poem titled 'Canada'. Here it is below thanks to www.nationalarchives.ie
